Since 1948, the Clallam County Historical Society has been dedicated to keeping the history of the north Olympic Peninsula alive. The Society actively collects artifacts pertaining to Clallam County, operates a research library, is a partner with the Clallam County Genealogical Society, is currently restoring the historic school building shown above, and tells the story of our county in the exhibits at The Museum at the Carnegie.

The Museum at the Carnegie

The Museum at the Carnegie offers a glimpse of life from Clallam County's past. Upstairs, "Strong People: Faces of Clallam County" introduces you to people who helped build our community. You will learn about early settlers in Charting the Last Frontier; hear the three distinct tribal languages in Our Ancestral Heritage; explore the arts in Body, Mind and Spirit; examine the issues behind the creation of Olympic National Park in This Land is Your Land; learn about timber and agriculture in Home Grown; find out about the towns that cover our county from east to west in Creating Communities; and discover our maritime history in Our Strategic Coastline.

Located at 207 S. Lincoln St. in Port Angeles, the Carnegie building is a piece of history in itself. Dedicated in 1919, the building has been beautifully restored. On the lower lever are more displays along with "Previously Owned Publications" in the Books Plus Shop. A meeting room for under 50 persons is available for rental.

Hours for the Museum at the Carnegie are Wednesday thru Saturday from 1-4 pm. The handicapped entrance and parking are located in back of the building. There is additional parking in the adjacent city parking lot. Suggested donations are $2 for adults and $5 for families.

The Historical Society also maintains a small exhibit in the lobby of the Richard B. Anderson Federal Building at 138 W. First St. in Port Angeles that includes a display case of military artifacts from the Society's collection. These may be viewed M-F, 8AM - 4PM.

Administrative services are in the Lincoln School Complex at 933 W. 9th St. in Port Angeles, housing our artifact storage, research library, and Clallam County Genealogical Society library. Our document collection includes more than 10,000 photographs, books, manuscripts, maps, newspapers, and vertical file material. The artifact collection covers all aspects of Clallam County history.
